A six-year-old girl has become the only surviving member of her family after a devastating high-speed train crash in southern Spain, one of the deadliest rail disasters in Europe in recent years.
The child was found walking alone along the railway tracks late on Sunday night, hours after two trains collided, killing her parents, brother, and cousin. Despite the scale of the tragedy, she suffered only a minor head injury.
According to Spanish media, the family had been returning to their home in Aljaraque, near the Atlantic coast in Huelva, after a joyful trip to Madrid to watch The Lion King musical. The outing had been a gift for the feast of Epiphany, a celebration observed across Spain alongside Christmas. During their visit, the family also toured Real Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, regional broadcaster Canal Sur reported.
The mayor of Aljaraque, Adrián Cano, described the girl’s survival as nothing short of a miracle.
“The town is broken by grief and with hardly any words of comfort,” he said.
Authorities confirmed that the child was cared for overnight by a police officer before being reunited with her grandmother in Córdoba.
Her story has touched millions across Spain, becoming a symbol of hope amid national sorrow.
The crash has left dozens of families desperate for answers. Official data shows that 47 missing persons reports have been filed, while only 10 victims have so far been formally identified.
Relatives of cardiologist Jesús Saldaña continue to appeal for information after his mobile phone was recovered but no trace of him has been found in hospitals or official records.
Among the injured is a woman five months pregnant who remains in intensive care. Her father, Alberto García, told Antena 3 that doctors are closely monitoring both her and her unborn child, whose heartbeat remains stable.
Firefighters rescued her unconscious from the wreckage as passengers broke windows to escape. Her sister, Ana, escaped with lighter injuries. Their dog, Boro, remains missing.
Ana believes her sister may have been hurt while trying to protect the animal.
“If I can’t do anything for her, at least I hope I can find Boro,” she told El Mundo.
Spain’s government has declared three days of national mourning. High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia remain suspended while investigators and rail safety experts examine the site.
King Felipe visited the crash location, thanking rescuers and volunteers who risked their own safety to help survivors.
Sixteen-year-old Julio Rodríguez was among the first to assist victims.
“My body became someone else’s. I only thought about helping,” he said, describing how he walked back and forth repeatedly to aid rescue efforts.
