Job Description

An Irrigation Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems to ensure crops receive the correct amount of water for optimal growth. This role involves troubleshooting irrigation issues, monitoring system performance, and supporting sustainable water management practices on the farm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, operate, and maintain irrigation systems, including drip lines, sprinklers, pumps, and control systems.
  • Monitor water usage and soil moisture levels to optimize irrigation schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in irrigation equipment and piping.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and water usage guidelines.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on irrigation systems.
  • Work collaboratively with farm managers and agronomists to plan irrigation strategies.
  • Maintain accurate records of irrigation activities, repairs, and water usage.
  • Train other farm staff on proper irrigation practices if required.
Required Skills
  • Strong technical knowledge of irrigation systems and water management.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues in pumps, valves, and control systems.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic computer skills for monitoring automated irrigation systems.
  • Teamwork and good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and risk management in agricultural environments.
Qualifications
  • Certificate III or IV in Irrigation, Horticulture, Agricultural Technology, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in irrigation installation and maintenance preferred.
  • Knowledge of Australian agricultural water management standards.
  • Forklift or machinery licenses are advantageous.
